Patient portrayal
Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), also known as chronic hives with no known cause, may happen when the immune system is out of balance. This
could lead to inflammation that contributes to spontaneous flare-ups that are not related to an allergy or obvious trigger. You may recognize this as the
itchy red or skin-colored bumps and swelling that appear on your skin.
DID YOU KNOW?
For about 50% of patients, antihistamines are not
enough, even when taking more than the standard dose
2-3 years is the average time people spend seeking
a diagnosis
Almost 2x as many women are affected by CSU
compared to men
2-5 years is the average length of most hives cases, but
some can last longer
SYMPTOMS OF CSU
Itchy hives happen spontaneously with no known cause.
6+ weeks of hives on and off, with or without angioedema (deep swelling under the skin).
Flare-ups that can last for days or even weeks.
Hives appear, disappear, then appear on another area.
Hives often show up on the chest, back, arms, or legs.
CSU CAN BE DIAGNOSED BY A SPECIALIST BASED ON YOUR SYMPTOMS AND MEDICAL
HISTORY. ALLERGY TESTING AND/OR SKIN BIOPSY IS NOT REQUIRED FOR DIAGNOSIS.
